Kevington is an area located in the Victorian High Country very popular for camping, four wheel drives and trail bikes. Its a beautiful location easily accessible via blacktop all the way, and is easy access for caravans, motor homes and 5th wheelers.   The roadside Skipworth Reserve itself is the only dirt encountered, and the camp ground is dog friendly

The camp ground has plenty of shaded areas, along with adequate solar and satellite friendly open space

As beautiful as it is, unfortunately the easily accessible location can at times attract people and groups that disregard their fellow campers when it comes to language and noise.   That’s always a possibly with all free camps, but some free camps are more prone than others seem to be.

Another issue throughout the region is the presence of the European Wasp, and they have been a presence here for at least 20+ years we’re personally aware of.   The wasps don’t seem to be as aggressive as their city brothers and sisters, but that said they are the same potentially aggressive species that usually bite us a BBQ’s.

The camp area itself has a coupe of long drop toilets which are quiet new, spacious and well maintained.  Barb mentioned, on her hate scale scale of long drops they are very very low.   A simple, often overlooked but welcome feature is the addition of toilet roll holders; which are only ever important when they are missing. The long drops are wheel chair accessible, concrete based and have ample room to set up a camp shower inside if you wont be inconveniencing the Easter weekend hordes.

The camp area is bordered by the upper Goulburn River, so there is abundant water year round (NOTE, river water is fine for washing and showering, but all rivers in Australia potentially carry bacteria and as such untreated consumption should be avoided.   You never know whats being dump or lying in the river upstream)

The camp area is dotted with terrific concrete fire pits complete with pole mounted swing plates and hang chains.   A handful of wooden picnic tables in good condition are randomly placed around the camp ground

The track through the northern gated end of the camp ground provides seasonal access to a more secluded camp area, but access is subject to the gate being open.

A short distance to the south of the camp ground is the iconic 150 year old Kevington Hotel, which is always worthy of a counter lunch, or a few beers in the beer garden over looking the Howqua River, or in bar watching a sporting event on the big screen TV

The hotel provides camping on the river flat next to the hotel for a small fee.  Whilst dogs are welcome in the beer garden, unfortunately pooches are no so welcome in the camp area.   There’s no power or water provided, but campers are welcome to use the hotels onsite showers and toilets
