Extending Drop Legs / Jacks

Known by a few names, drop jacks, corner steadies, drop legs, whatever they’re called sometimes they just aren’t quite long enough, or when they are winding them out to their full extension is a painfully long process.   32mm x 3mm square aluminium section slides very neatly inside Alko drop legs.   The extension of the leg is a threaded rod thats in the centre of the drop leg, the aluminium section slides in around the thread rod and doesn’t interfere with the usual leg function at all.   The choice of aluminium over steel is that standard steel section sizes don’t fit neatly inside each other leaving a lot of rattle room.   Aluminium of the hand comes in dimesnsions which different, and as luck would have it the 32x32x3 alum sqaure section slids perfectly into the Alko steel leg section

In addition to the neat fit of the aluminium is the added bonus of the aluminium being less weight

Remove the foot from the drop jack slide the aluminium section inside as far as it will go, and mark it for cutting adding enough to allow the foot to be re-attached to the protruding end of aluminium sleeve.   Slide the sleeve into the leg and drill the first hole through both the foot mount hole on the steel leg through the sleeve.   The hole needs to slightly larger than the lynch pin.   Remove the sleeve and drill as many holes along the aluminium section as you prefer (recommended every 100mm or so).   Repeat identically on all 4 legs

Slide the sleeve into the leg, using the lynch pin through the leg and first hole drilled in the sleeve to hold the sleeve in place.  Reattached the foot to the end of the aluminium sleeve.   The drop leg now has an easy to use around 300mm internal permanently mounted extension sleeve, used by removing the lynch pin and re-inserting it at the desired length.

Wire lock lynch pins are available at Bolt Bars, and aluminium section from metal or aluminium supplies

We’ve vigorously tested these extensions for more than 4 years, and over 60k demanding km’s
